Filmora Wondershare is one of the most convenient video software on the market.

And it makes adding subtitles easier than ever.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to add and style subtitles inside Filmora

Does Filmora Have a Built-In Auto-Subtitling Feature?

Yes — Filmora includes a built-in automatic subtitle tool called Speech-to-Text (STT). This feature makes adding subtitles to your videos faster and easier than ever.

With just a few clicks, Filmora can analyze the audio in your video, transcribe the dialogue, and create timed captions directly on your timeline.

How to Automatically Add Subtitles in Filmora

If you're looking to add subtitles to your videos in Filmora without the manual hassle, the built-in Speech-to-Text (STT) feature is your go-to solution.

Step 1: Import Your Video

Begin by launching Filmora and creating a new project. Import your video file by clicking on the Import button and selecting your desired clip. Once imported, drag the video onto the timeline to prepare it for editing.

Step 2: Access the Speech-to-Text Feature

Filmora offers multiple ways to activate the STT function:

  • Method 1: Select the audio or video clip on the timeline, navigate to the top menu, click on Tools > Audio > Speech-to-Text.
  • Method 2: Right-click on the selected clip and choose Speech-to-Text from the context menu.
  • Method 3: Click on the Speech-to-Text icon in the toolbar above the timeline.

Step 3: Configure Transcription Settings

Upon activating the STT feature, a settings window will appear:

  • Language Selection: Choose the language spoken in your video's audio to ensure accurate transcription.
  • Auto-Match to Timeline: Ensure this option is checked to synchronize the generated subtitles with your video's timing automatically.

After configuring these settings, click OK to initiate the transcription process.

Step 4: Review and Edit Subtitles

Once the transcription is complete, Filmora will display the subtitles as editable text layers on your timeline. To refine them:

  • Edit Text: Double-click on any subtitle segment to correct errors or adjust phrasing.
  • Adjust Timing: Drag the edges of subtitle layers to fine-tune their appearance duration.
  • Style Customization: Modify font, size, color, and position to match your video's aesthetic.

Step 5: Export Your Video with Subtitles

After finalizing your subtitles, proceed to export your video:

  • Hardcoded Subtitles: If you want the subtitles permanently embedded in your video, export the project as usual, and the subtitles will be burned into the footage.
  • Separate Subtitle File: To export subtitles as a separate file (e.g., .srt), right-click on the subtitle track and select Export Subtitle File. This option is useful for platforms that support external subtitle files.

Filmora makes it also easy to import and sync them with your video.

Filmora supports the following subtitle formats:

  • .srt (SubRip Subtitle)
  • .ass (Advanced SubStation Alpha)
  • .ssa (SubStation Alpha)The most commonly used is .srt. It’s simple, lightweight, and works perfectly with Filmora.

With your video in the timeline, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Titles tab
  2. Click on Subtitles in the left-hand sidebar
  3. Press the “+” button or choose “Import Subtitle File”
  4. Browse and select your .srt, .ass, or .ssa file
  5. Click Open

Filmora will automatically generate subtitle segments based on your file and place them on a subtitle track above your video.

How to Generate Filmora Subtitles Automatically

Filmora’s built-in subtitle tools are helpful. But if you’re working on longer videos, need subtitles in multiple languages, or want more editing power — they can quickly feel limited.

That’s where Checksub comes in.

Step 1: Generate Subtitles

Go to checksub.com and sign in (or create a free account).

Click “Upload Video” and choose the file you want to subtitle. Checksub supports all major formats, so there’s no need to convert anything before uploading.

Once uploaded, select the original language of the video. Want to translate subtitles into more languages? You can do that too — right from the dashboard.

After the upload, Checksub’s AI gets to work:

  • It transcribes the audio with high accuracy
  • Breaks down speech into subtitle-length lines
  • Syncs each caption with the video timeline

This process takes just a few minutes, even for longer videos.

No manual typing. No complicated tools. It’s all done for you.

Step 2: Edit and Review Your Subtitles

Once your subtitles are generated, you can review and clean them up using Checksub’s intuitive editor.

You can:

  • Fix any minor transcription errors
  • Adjust timing for faster or slower speech
  • Add speaker labels or sound cues
  • Keep line lengths short and mobile-friendly

The live preview makes it easy to see exactly how each subtitle will appear during playback.

Step 3: Export Subtitles

When your subtitles are ready, click Export and choose .srt as your file format.

Checksub will generate a clean, well-timed .srt file that’s fully compatible with Filmora. Just make sure you save it with UTF-8 encoding (default in Checksub) to avoid formatting issues.
